New Adams Avenue Farmers Market opportunity
Hello to friends of the Adams Avenue Farmers Market.
Back in May of 2011 the Adams Avenue Farmers Market closed.
The work that needed to be done on the recreation grounds where it was being held is now complete... and there is now excellent flood-lighting for the entire field, offering an even more inviting environment for the farmers market than before.
One of the chief issues for a farmers market held in the middle of the week, is that most people need it to be open after work hours. With the new lighting that can now be done.

I, too, am new to the area and was SO looking forward to a Farmer's Market within walking distance of my home. I walk everywhere anyway and would loved to have supported this endeavor. So sad I didn't get to try it before it was already gone.
Please - bring it back! I don't know what the issues were, but I would definitely support this market. Maybe trying a different evening? Different time? Alternating weeks or days? There has to be a way to get this going and keep it going.

I'm so sad to see the market go!! I am new to the area, but already count it in as one of the places I can go during the week to get my produce, both for personal and professional use. We need good mid week markets. Early ones for the restaurants and late ones for people getting off of work in the early evening. So sad.
Signs are still up on Adams Ave
I thought this was still in operation due to the sign(s) on the lamppost heading eastbound on Adams Ave and was going to try the market for the first time because I'm fed up with the pandemonium of Hillcrest. Too bad it closed down--I am glad I checked here first!

The location was all wrong and we knew it right from the start. A sketchy area (women, in particular, are not apt to feel safe there at night), an unattractive, uninviting site with tall, chain link fencing all around, literally no parking, hardly visible, not marketed, and not near other local stops. The original plans for 40th St. would have made a difference, as would Rite Aid lot or similar venue. Please give it another try to resolve the issues with Caltrans or find a better location (recommend more resident input and vetting the next time) and bring back the Adams Avenue market.
Agree the location was NOT GOOD
I tried to attend this market from University Heights and found it totally inaccessible and a bit rough. But I can see how it would work well for those walking from the Normal Heights neighborhood.
Perhaps try a more inviting location?
I live near the Hillcrest market and think it too should be moved to a better location....the field in front of the old Normal School would be perfect.....
I'm a woman..
and I live a few blocks north of the school. I still walk here, night and day; never hassled, the only place I may avoid at night is the 7/11 parking lot. That said..
I went to the first farmers market at Adams School. I went to the 2nd and the 3rd one. I never bought a thing.
I like the City Heights market. It feels "real", I find things here that I can't get at Vons. I don't shop at Henry's (too many bad experiences) and the other places a lot of people swear by are too pricey for me.
I've lived in this hood for almost 60 years (my entire life) and have seen "new blood" come in starting when I was in my 20's. Many came and went, leaving behind a 2 lane Adams Avenue, the horrible "pink intersection" that never worked, things like that. Save the Street Fair and Roots Festival, few new ideas have worked and a lot seems to be that the residents don't have input.
So, R.I.P. Farmers Market.. this goes with the movies at Ward Park that never happened and the Trolley Barn Park concerts that also appear to be gone.

I beg your pardon. This is a fantastic neighborhood and there's no reason anyone should feel unsafe. I found the lot where the market was to be *MUCH* more attractive than either the North Park one (in a tacky, littered drugstore lot) or the Hillcrest one (in the middle of a road and a DMV car park). Compared to those, the Adams location is a beautiful park-like setting with a fantastic assortment of families and children about.

There's no reason to feel unsafe in this neighborhood. I've lived here for years. Granted, it's not suburbia, but the locals are consistently friendly & helpful. And parking is ALWAYS available, so long as you are willing to walk a block or two (and walking a block or two down Adams on a cool evening is always a pleasure).
And as far as the Market being too far from local merchants? Well, not only do you have DeMille's, Blind Lady, Rosie's, Cabaret Cafe, Villa Del Mar, and even a Subway within 1/4 mile radius, but Kensington is a ten-minute walk away.
I've been tied up with other commitments on Wednesday nights for the past few months, and on the one recent Wednesday I actually had free, I discovered the Farmers' Market was gone. Please try to get this going again; Adams has institutions like the Street Fair, Roots & Blues Fest, Taste of Adams, and the Art & Music Walk. This community CAN support a farmers' market.

The Adams Avenue Village area is exactly the right area for a farmers market.
It's appropriate to the Normal Heights - Kensington Culture and a boon for the merchants and nightlife of the Adams Avenue Village, as well as being a good community experience for all of us.
As to the parking... your response is entirely correct. The Village area of Adams Avenue is just right for walking... that's much of it's charm.
As a member of the 34th and Adams Business Center and the prime mover for www.adamsavenuevillage.com, I would be interested in anyone's comments... Pro or Con... as to the viability of re-establishing the Farmers Market, as well as suggestions towards accomplishing that end.
